Bad neighbor updating

My Voxiness has up and left. It is sorely missed.

I am now on Geriatric inpatient psychiatry. This might be my niche- I like working with geri patients. There is the little old lady who calls me Miss Beautiful, and there is the little old lady who tells me to drink her p*ss after we get a sample.  And then there are those who are not too little and not too old and will come out of their respective stages of immobility to throw their walker at me. I love it all.

So I'm going to be an expert. πŸ™‚ They offered me a fellowship at the first place I'd interviewed. I liked it so much I accepted that offer, and am canceling the rest of my interviews. They better train me well.

People like you are needed, that's for sure! My grandpa lives at a nursing home that is far from swanky, but it's paid for thanks to his WWII military service. One of the other residents is known to staff as "The Choker." I'm told he's a very nice fellow with a sunny disposition; the only trouble is he likes to choke people. He doesn't realize the other person isn't having fun too. Staff have been witnessed exclaiming, "Uh-oh, where's Fred?" and running off down the hall to make sure he's securely confined.

Your grandpa is lucky..the major issue with geri population is placement. They often have multiple medical illnesses along with psychiatric probs, and all too often not enough money/insurance to pay for it. We had one gentleman sent over from the nursing home because he would lie in his bed and curse loudly all day long. Very nice guy, never had any problems all his life, then blew his temporal lobe and ended up with this. I am frustrated by how limited we are in what we can do, but the work is still very gratifying.

    πŸ™‚ Thank you.

  5. Nice to see you back, but I'm glad you are going into geriatric psych. Good geriatric specialists are hard to come by. My husband spent his last years in a nursing home, so he was examined by geriatric doctors even though he was in his 30s. They were far more compassionate and attentive than the university neurologists and GPs he had seen earlier, and they made a tremendous difference in how he felt.

  6. Congratulations on the fellowship. Its great that you found a speciality you really like!

Thank you. I hope I can be one of those compassionate and attentive docs- it comes much more easily when you're dealing with the elderly. I'm sorry about your husband-losing someone is always hard, but much more so when they're in their youth.

πŸ™‚ Thank you! I can't wait to get started.

  9. Oh that is just wonderful! I believe that is an area that really needs attention. Go girl!

Congratulations! It's always great to find a fit, flying walkers notwithstanding.
And I understand well about the lack of Voxiness. πŸ˜‰
