Weekend soup and bread

Susan at the Wild Yeast Blog made a fabulous roasted potato sourdough bread, with whole potato chunks in it. I just had to make it this weekend.

The bread has the soft, moist crumb of a potato bread. And the roasted potato chunks are better than any nuts/spices I've ever added to bread.

We paired the bread with a herby green soup. I was tired of the usual hearts and flowers sort of designs on top, and wanted to try something new. This design seemed kinda cool and interesting, like ninepins.

Until hubby came home and said, 'Why are you drawing scrotums in my soup?'

Note to self- Stop watching Bizarre Foods.

    Mmm…. The soup photo is especially beautiful – I just love the angles and colors and the shape of the spoon echoed in the "scrotums." (and the idea of spinach mint soup!)

    I love the look of the potato bread. Have never baked a bread myself (unless banana bread counts). The soup looks fantastic and I like the new design. LOL at your husband's remark. 😀
    How did the spinach soup taste? Sounds a little too healthy for me… 🙂

    Banana bread counts! (Especially when toasted..)The soup was quite good, actually. But then, I've always loved spinach soup, especially with sour yogurt stirred in. The reviews on Epicurious were more mixed.

  14. hee….it's fun to move it around and see what's out there, beyond the boundaries!Yes! Little explosions of flavor nestled in the bread: tiny cabbages! WOW!If I find out that my oven isn't broken, I'll make some bread. You're making me want to do that again. Not the kneading-yeast kind, just Bisquik, but still. Bread. *sigh*

    Bread is bread! Go for it..(I'd cook the Brussels sprouts first, before adding them to the dough. Then I'd send pieces of the wonderful bread to salivating Vox neighbors like Purplesque.)

  16. OMG, I was already going crazy seeing all the potato breads around. They are literally everywhere. Now I saw yours. I really wanna cry — I still haven't started birthing my sourdough starter. Your soup looks fabulous too. The design looks great, very unusual and elegant. Congratulations on making me completely hooked on your food! 🙂

    Too funny, the husband's comment! I see Christmas ornaments. I'm not much of a bread eater, as you know, but yor pics make me wish I were! It's gorgeous! I can just taste it warm with a dab of butter.

    By the way, I still admire your sourdough adventures. I'm not sure I'd have enough patience unless I could do sourdough in the machine, and take it out to rise later.

    🙂 Thanks, Wbaby. I was always a bread lover, and become a bigger one with each sourdough.

    Y'know, the interesting thing is..I'm a very impatient person as well. I love to cook, but as a kid all my food was undercooked coz I couldn't wait. Oh, and I was constantly dropping pots and pans. Cooking over the years, and now baking, has really taught me patience.

    Thank you, SH. You know the sourdough will wait for as long as needed..take your time. I've finally settled on the least-resistance approach. I have the 50% starter, I keep it in the fridge and back bread once a week. When I don't want to, I can always throw the starter in my regular rotis.

    LOL @Limbaugh! Glad you liked the granola. Re: chana masala, someone told me about boiling a single dried red chilli with the chickpeas before the tadka. Gives it a killer flavor.
