Sunday brunch- memories of Sagar Ratna

Sagar Ratna (literally- jewel of the sea) was one of our favorite restaurants in Delhi, serving South Indian idlis (steamed rice/lentil cakes) and dosas( crisp pancakes made of fermented rice/lentil batter) along with the usual North Indian fare. I have fond memories of ordering curd rice for home delivery after a long day of work. It came with assorted chutneys and pappadams, making a very satisfying, light-on-the-pocket meal.

Coconut-cilantro chutney

-1 cup fresh/frozen grated coconut
-1 bunch cilantro, de-stemmed
-1 green chilli, chopped
-1/4 cup roasted peanuts
-1 inch piece fresh ginger
-2 tbsp lemon juice
-2 tbsp tangy plain yogurt
-salt to taste
– puree together in food processor/blender until smooth

Tempering
– 1 tbsp sesame oil
– 1 tsp mustard seeds
– 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
– 1 tbsp split yellow/white lentils
– a few curry leaves
– heat oil in small skillet and add all other ingredients. Wait till they splutter, then add to the chutney.

Traditionally served with idlis, dosas and sambhar (lentil-vegetable stew). Also great as a spread for sandwiches, or a dip with flatbread crisps.

Perfect post-call comfort food. Now its time for the postprandial nap. 🙂

Coconut! Oh yum. That looks awesome. Did you make the idli yourself too, Wonder Woman?

Lol..I did, though these were the quicker ones made of toasted semolina, also known as rawa idli. We have a microwave idli steamer, which makes easy work of steaming idlis.
