Last night, two patients in the hospital tried to leave. One of them just wanted to go to another hospital because the good doctors here had switched her IV pain medications to oral. We were consulted to make sure she had the capacity to leave against medical advice.
Dear Doctor, just because a patient wants to leave your care does not imply she has lost her marbles. She may have bad judgment, but this is a free country.
The second person tried to leave the world by hanging himself while he was in the hospital because he wasn't getting enough pain meds for his injuries. By the time we saw him, he had practically been knocked out by the cornucopia of IV pain meds. His pupils were pinpoint. But he told me he would try to kill himself again if his pain was not taken care of.
I now have four more.
Psychiatry is fun.
